Woven

Textiles are a growing component of our waste stream.  According to a number of sources including the United Nations Envirionment Program 60% of material made into clothing is made from synthetic fibers which are materials derived from petroleum.  Nylon, polyester, spandex, elastin and acrylic are essentially all forms of plastic

When these fabrics are washed and dried tiny microfibers are released and make their way into our water, air and soil.

SZW is working to stop this toxicity from occurring locally by repurposing used textiles into new usable items for you.  Moreover this work is being done through a skills building program for recent immigrants and refugee women that possess some talent sewing and making handicrafts. This work is in collaboration with Refugee and Immigrant Connections Spokane and our primarily clients are Afghan women.

Project Woven kicked off in the Summer of 2023 under the guidance of Pam Davies, an SZW volunteer staff member and Executive Director Elyse Hochstadt along with the support of Nextcycle Washington and Smith Barbieri Progressive Fund Grants.

Over the course of 6 months, language barriers have been crossed, cultural processes have been shared and a variety of textile creations have been made.  Take a look and make a purchase that will support the continuation and growth of this program.

What’s next?

SZW is pursuing multiple ways to create local circularity and keep materials out of the waste stream. We’re currently working on a project with two Spokane based institutions to bring you something uniquely Spokane. Keep an eye out here and on our social media channels for updates!
